As a child I loved the Richard Scarry book at my Grandma’s house, the illustrations stand out in my mind, my favourite characters were Lowly Worm and Huckle Cat.
Richard Scarry was an American children’s author and illustrator who published hundreds of books from the 1960’s onwards.
Busytown was central to Scarry’s most famous series of books and his characters always had human attributes, they were usually cats, rabbits, pigs and mice, but he also incorporated beavers, raccoons, hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, owls, bears, goats, elephants, foxes, gorillas, crocodiles, dogs, worms and many more.
Scarry also included accurate drawings of architecture and machinery, making the illustrated worlds very realistic, even if the characters weren’t! More recently his work has been converted to animated videos or series.
I recently passed on this love of Richard Scarry books, by getting my 4 year old niece one of his books as a birthday present, I hope she loves it as much as I did as a child.
